We received a call about a dispute between a husband and wife. I arrived to find the husband kneeling on the street with his wife in front of him. He was holding a large kitchen knife to her neck, and threatening to kill her. We were about 20 feet away as we gave loud commands to put the knife down. It seemed to anger him more. In minutes, six officers surrounded the scene, and stood at a safe distance. I then learned he had stabbed her once in the abdomen, and I could see her blouse wet with blood. I exposed myself from cover, and holstered my handgun. I got within 15 feet, and spoke to him. It was the longest 19 minutes of my life, but I was able to convince him to surrender peacefully. With the team work of the shift, we saved two lives that day.
