I responded to a personal injury vehicle accident on a local highway where the occupants were trapped inside and the vehicle was on fire. The engine compartment was fully engulfed and the passenger compartment was also catching on fire. Upon arrival, I pulled an occupant out through the back hatch. The driver was also pinned in and was beginning to suffer severe burns on his arms and torso. I wasn't able to extricate him myself. Other Officers soon arrived and I took off my Elbeco duty shirt and placed it on top of the burning driver to help protect him from the heat. After much effort, officers were able to get the driver out of the driver's seat and away from the heat. Although the driver passed away the next day, we were able to give him a chance and allow his family to say goodbye to him at the hospital.
