During the War of 1812, British warships sailed to the mouth of Delaware Bay. The British commander rowed ashore to Lewes and asked for food and supplies for his sailors. He was rejected, and the British fleet promptly shelled the town.
That probably was the last time anyone in Lewes has been inhospitable to men in uniform, especially in the nearly 30 years since Bill Graves started Graves Uniforms.
The store, which overlooks scenic Delaware Bay, specializes in uniforms for police, fire, security, industrial, and hospital workers and carries Elbeco shirts, trousers, and jackets. Graves Uniforms’ region includes Delaware, the eastern shore of Maryland, southern New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania.
For the past 15 years, Graves Uniforms has also operated an embroidery and silk-screening shop in nearby Milford, Delaware, that dovetails nicely with its uniform business.
And Elbeco’s approach to business dovetails nicely with Graves Uniforms’ own approach.
“Elbeco is innovative and creative,” says Bill Graves, founder and owner of Graves Uniforms. “They’re true to their word, and if our salesperson doesn’t have an item in stock, they'll call around to other dealers until they find one to help us fill an order.”
Graves is equally upbeat about his own staff.
“Our staff is very experienced, we’re courteous, and we keep the store neat and clean,” he says. “A lot of our customers like to come here for vacation, and while they’re here, they like to visit our store.”
Cars can use Graves Uniforms’ convenient free parking. Flotillas are treated less kindly.
