Chicopee is no stranger to uniforms. The town, which was founded more than 360 years ago, was within a day’s ride of more than a handful of significant Revolutionary War battles and sits just west of Springfield, birthplace of the legendary Springfield rifle.
Since the 1960s, Sentry has been serving the uniform needs of customers in five of the original thirteen colonies—New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island—as well as in neighboring Vermont. In addition, the company supplies various accessories to Air Force bases around the country.
Though it specializes in police and fire uniforms, Sentry also maintains ample stocks of military, security, American Legion, and postal uniforms, not to mention a complete line of police footwear, flashlights, duty belts, mace, collar seals, name plates, badges, and other accessories.
Sentry distinguishes itself from other vendors by keeping a huge inventory and providing service that second-generation president Mike O’Leary describes as “second to none. People can get shirts or pants right off the shelf, and we’ll sew on patches, hem pants, take in waists, sew on parade stripes—whatever they need.”
Is that enough in today’s competitive marketplace?
“Years ago, we sold a policeman his first pair of boots when he first started on the force,” says O’Leary. “Now he’s police chief, and he was in the store just the other day.”
That means “yes.” “Elbeco provides great delivery,” O’Leary says. “Their salesmen do a great job and they offer great products with up-to-date fabrics at prices that are reasonable.”
